Take an exciting trip through the beautiful Gamtoos backroads, ending in the southern part of the Rus En Vrede 4x4 route.

Highlights

  • Drive through 7 stunning mountain passes including the Kouga River Pass, Moordenaarskloof Pass, Meidenek Pass, and Surranysberg Pass.
  • Visit the William Phillips Irrigation Tunnel, a piece of local history.
  • Enjoy the beautiful Kouga/Oyster Bay gravel roads.
  • Camp in the lovely Bokmakirie, Ragels River.

Tour Details

  • Total Distance: About 410 km (with around 300 km on gravel, 4x4, or off-road).
  • Terrain: Be ready for some road building and clearing of overgrowth
  • Vehicle Requirements: A 4x4 vehicle with low range and high clearance is needed. 4x4 trailers and caravans can be towed to the campsite.
  • Start Point: Hankey
  • End Point: Humansdorp

Itinerary

Arrival - Hankey to Ragels River
Depart from Hankey, passing through the William Philips Irrigation Tunnel, along Antjies se Pad, Kouga River Pass, and Moordenaarskloof Pass before reaching Ragels River.

Day 2 - Ragels River/Kouga Mountains
Experience a 4x4 loop through a private farm and venture onto the southern section of the Rus En Vrede 4x4 route, including the Meidenek Pass.

Day 3 - Ragels River to Humansdorp
Travel through Kouga River Pass, Surranysberg Pass, Kareedow Pass, and Oyster Bay before arriving in Humansdorp.
