Packing Tips

Packing for a 4x4 adventure is all about being prepared for the unexpected. From essential recovery gear and camping equipment to food, water and clothing for changing conditions, the right packing list can make your journey safer, more comfortable and a whole lot more enjoyable.

  • Plan your packing list.
  • Determine where to store each item.
  • Last In, First Out:
    • Pack items like the camping table last so they are first accessible.
  • Start From Scratch:
    • Evaluate necessity: Do you really need each item?
  • Regular Use:
    • Items needing easy access.
  • Occasional Use:
    • Items not needed often.
  • Rarely Needed:
    • Spares and seldom-used items.
  • Non-negotiable Items:
    • First Aid Kit
    • Fire Extinguisher
    • Personal Medication
    • Ensure these are easy to access.
  • Centre of Gravity:
    • Pack heaviest items low and lightest higher up.
  • Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM):
    • Balance weight evenly (front and back, left and right).
  • Consider external accessories, rooftop rack, passengers, fuel, food, and water.
  • Distribute & balance the weight evenly, front and back, left and right
  • Do not exceed max GVM.
  • Strap down loose items.
  • Secure breakables.
  • Keep fridges full for efficiency.
  • Label boxes and bags for easy identification.
  • Ensure recovery equipment is accessible.
  • Hat, cap, & sunscreen.
  • Raincoat, jacket, or umbrella.
  • Reference books (for mammals, birds, trees, etc.).
  • Cell phone & chargers.
  • Emergency whistle.

What to bring along on Tour

To help you enjoy your adventure comfortably and safely, we recommend bringing the following items along.

  • Personal toiletries (enviro-friendly) & toilet paper
  • Binoculars
  • Camera with accessories & chargers
  • Appropriate clothing (depending on season but days generally are warm to hot and winter evening can be cold)
  • Appropriate footwear - Drivers must wear closed shoes that are compatible with uneven rough terrain. Around accommodation footwear with strong hard bottom recommended to prevent thorns piercing through. Wet shoes are recommended for river crossings.

    • It is recommended that each Vehicle has Rated Recovery Points attached to the Chassis, front & back

    Note: Each Vehicle should be self sufficient & should have its own First Aid Kit & Basic Recovery Kit.

    • Cooking utensils (kettle, cooking pots, mugs, glasses , wooden spoon, can opener, egg lifter, cutlery, crockery, wooden carving board, paper towels, hot water flask, table cloth, drying and washing cloths)
    • Small gas stove/ cooker, gas bottles & matches for cooking purposes
    • Sufficient food and beverage supplies
    • Refrigerator or cooler box
    • Folding table and chairs
    • Water purification tablets
    • Plastic bowl for washing dishes
    • Plastic refuse bags
    • Torches (x2) and spare batteries
    • Gas lamp
      • Portable Shower & Water
      • Portable Toilet Seat, Spade, Toilet Paper, Sanitiser etc.
      • Be fully self sufficient In addition to the Self Drive Camping Gear (What to Bring along on Tour Guideline), we recommend the following as for for Wild Camping:
      • 40lt of water for showering, dishes etc.
      • Minimum of 2lt per day for drinking & cooking. Ie 5 days wild camping would be 10lt water.
      • A portable toilet seat stand - for those that do not want to squat for the toilet along the trail.
      • Spade for digging hole for toilet. All toilet and toilet paper must be buried at least 1 foot (30 cm) under the ground.
      • Portable shower, pump and bowl/bucketThere is only one basic toilet and paraffin shower available at the Mvubu Rustic Bush Camp.
